Roman Journal Entry

By: Belal Abdel

Italy's location greatly helped the Roman Empire. Italy was a peninsula in the center of the Mediterranian Sea. Rome was right in the middle of Italy. Italy was very easy to unify, so the Romans had a large empire. Italy was not a bunch of seperate valleys, it was all connected together. Because of this it was easier to rule the empire. The Romans were greatly helped by this. Unlike Athens, which was many, small valleys, and was harder to rule. The Romans were able to easily control Italy.

Another reason Italy was such a good place for the Romans to rule was because of the Apennine Mountains. The mountains weren't as rough as the mountains of Greece. Also the mountains went throughout the Italian peninsula. This was also another reason for the great rule of the Romans. Another main reason was because of the fertile plains in the north under the Alps, and the west, where there were Roman settlers. Because the plains were so fertile, there were many crops grown, and this helped support the Roman population, which as rapidly growing.

In conclusion, the Romans had one of the greates empires in world history. There were many reasons for this, but none, I believe, more important than the location of Italy. All of the above mentioned, fertile plains, not very rugged mountains, and a solid land, the Romans were able to control their empire. This helped the Romans become one of the most powerful empires to ever have stood, and this was also the reason that the Romans were such a strong empire, for such a long time.
