Creative Writing: Going back to Rome By: Belal Abdel I had this genius idea, why not go back in time and see Rome. I was doing a project on it, and I wanted to know what it was like. So the following writing is based on my experiences in Rome. Amazing. That's the only way to describe how I feel as I walk down the streets of Rome. There are many small villages around here, and there are very many people around here. Many of the people are talking about the newly set up republic. They say it has been started because they never want to be ruled or onquered again, and they have told me that the reason for this was because of the many long years for which they were ruled by a monarch. They tell me that they call it republic because it means "thing of the people". There is a strong belief here that the republic would keep Rome from an individual gaining a large amount power. The republic has a senate, and that is the most powerful governing body of the republic. It's made up of about 300 people, and all of the members are patricians. All of the patricians are members of the land-holding upper class. The senators here don't just serve for a couple of years, they serve for life! They get to give out decrees and interpret the laws. There is a lot of commotion now because it is the time of the year when two consuls are elected. There are two new consuls every year, and their job is to supervise the governments business. They also get to command armies. They also come from the patrician class, but they can only serve one term, after that theit finished. Not only that, but the consuls always have to consult the senate. This is a very smart system by Rome, because their time is only one year, they have a way of checks on the system of power of the government. There are always precautions for the government, though. If there is war they might elect a dictator, who will rule for 6 months. During that 6 months they get complete control over the government, but once the 6 months was up he had to give up his power. This system of government by the Romans is unbelievable. It's amazing how prepared they are and how on task they are. They are ready for anything, and their system is so strict that they do the same thing every year, without exception. Every year they elect two consuls, and every year the last consuls give up power. This republic is one of the most effecient forms of government ever seen, it's unbelievable. | ![]() | ![]() |
