Leonardo da Vinci had a very interesting childhood. He was born on April 15, 1452. Even from early on his family could see his genius. In 1457, along with his grandfather, Leonardo moved from the city of Anchiano, to the beautiful city Vinci. Leonardo was integrated into his fathers side of the family because he was an illegitimet child. Da Vincis father didn't have children with his first wife, but got a peasant girl named Caterina pregnant. Leonardo lived mainly with his father, and he was able to get scholarly books that his family and friends had. While in Vinci, Leonardo attended school, and his teachers had trouble with all of Leonardo's questions. While in school, da Vinci learned to read and write, he also learned geometry and Latin. In the year 1466, at the age of 14, Leonardo moved to Florence.

While in Florence, Leonardo started his apprenticeship in the shop of Andrea del Verrochio. While there his great talent was shown greatly. He helped del Verrochio with the paintin Baptsim of Christ, and later on he painted his own painting called Annunciation. In 1477, da Vinci started his own pracitce. This began a new era for da Vinci, as he would begin to move around and start his long line of great inventions.

Family/Social Life

Leonardo da Vinci's family life was very complicated. He lived with his father for most of his childhood, and never spent time with his mother. The reason for this is because his mother was a peasant girl named Caterina. His father never had children with his first wife, so Leaonardo was not a legitimate child, and his whole life he was nevere legitimated. Da Vinci's great grandfather was the florentine notary Sir Guido de Ser Michele da Vinci. Also in his family there were his grandparents Antonio and Lucia. His grandfather Anotnio broke the family tradition of notary, and thus started Leonardo becoming and artist. If Antonio had not stopped the tradition of notary, da Vincis father would have almost definitely made him take up notary. Another member of Leonardo's family was Ser Piero, Leonardo's father. Although Ser Piero did take the tradition of notary, he didn't make Leonardo take it up. He didn't marry Leonardo's mother, instead he married Albiero, in 1452, the same year Leonardo was born. Leonardo's mother was Catarina. She did not marry Ser Piero, and it is said that Leonardo didn't live with his father, but with Catarina for his early years. A few years after the birth of Leonardo, Catarina married a man named Accatabriga di Piero di Luca. Leonardo's father went on to marry three other women.

       Professional Life

Leonardo da Vinci's professional life was spent in many places. First, Leonardo started in Vinci, where he was the apprentice of Andrea del Verrochio. But da Vinci began to get bored with what he was doing, so at the age of 30, Leonrado left for Milan. While in Milan he wanted to gain the patronage of Ludovico Sforza, who was the Duke of Milan. He spent the next 17 years of his life in Milan. But in the year 1499, da Vinci left Milan because of the Duke's fall from power. From the years 1485-1490, da Vinci started studies on many different subjects. He studied flying machines, nature, geometry, canals, mechanics, and architecture. In the years before the Duke fell, da Vinci worked on avariety of things. Not only did he do paintings and sculptures, but also da Vinci worked on weapons, buildings, machinery, and he put together the festivals. Leonardo was always hard at work, and it seemed like he had very little time to do anything else. After the fall of the Duke, da Vinci started to study many different topics. From these studies he developed many great inventions. One thing were his ideas for war weapons. Da Vinci was the one who had the idea of using a tank as a war weapon. Da Vinci also helped create the submarine, and other weapons used in wars.

Leonardo da Vinci's golden years involved him creating things that are still used today, and that are still famous today. First of all, da Vinci was the artist of the great work The Mona Lisa, as everyone already knows. One thing that many people don't know, however, is that da Vinci was the innovator of many different things. Da Vinci painted the Virgin on The Rocks under the commision of Ludovico Sforza. Leonardo da Vinci is regarded by many as the greatest artist/investor in history. Da Vinci was the creator of not only works of art, but he was also the creator of war weapons. He helped design the missle launchers that are used today in war. It is well known about what Leonardo helped create because he logged it all in a journal. In that journal there were sketches of things that are used to save lives. The early sketches of a life preserver, and a parachute. Also, Leonardo had what has been called the first blueprint for an airplane or helicopter. He had visions of man being able to get airborne, but he was never able to create the invention. Many of da Vinci's designs had the flapping wings, and at the time that da Vinci lived, it was close to impossible to get anything like that even close to being created.
