Facts:

WWI military training camps

  • Soldiers spent most of their time doing drills
  • They had limited food
  • Poor treatment in hospitals
  • The military leaders were strict

Mustard Gas

  • The made blisters
  • Invented in 1917
  • They were used by Great Britain, France, Germany and Austria-Hungary
  • It was heavier than air and it sank into the trenches.

Discuss how accurate Remarque's descriptions of these events are.

The descriptions are accurate because it shows how life in military camps existed as meaningless. It shows what happens on the battle field and what the men do in their daily lives. The events were not shown as bloody because the men were not stressed about what they were doing. The description of the mustard gas was also accurate.

On the internet, briefly research life inside the trenches; evaluate what type of life these soldiers lived.

The life of the soldiers inside the trenches was hard and gruelin and very dangerous. They always had to live in fear of an enemy attack The trenches were small so there was not much room.  It was hard to get supplies into the trenches. Also the soldiers had to do multiple things, defend themselves and attack from inside the trenches. They lived in the worst of positions and the work would be tiresome and a living hell. But they were disciplined and ready for what they had to do. Life in the trench was hard and demanding on a soldier.

Describe the circumstance in a film or book you are familiar with in which a frightening or unpleasant situation made a character feel closer to a friend.

A film that I can think of that made a character feel closer to a friend is in the Matrix. I remember when at the end of the film, Neo was fighting the agents, and he go shot in the chest multiple times, he falls back into the wall behind him, and then falls to the ground, this is all while he is in the Matrix. Back in the real world, Trinity, his friend, is trying to get Neo to wake up, she tells Neo that he cant die, because she was told that she would fall in love with The One who is the hero of the film, and she loved Neo, which meant he was The One and the One couldnt die because he had to beat the agents. Then, Neo stands up and kills the agents, and when he gets back to the real world, they kiss each other and have fallen in love.
